What is the mental state of world and how it impacts you?
Six months ago I didn’t know that the Mental state of the world report by Sapien Labs existed, now it’s seared in my brain. Over a million people sampled across 82 countries tells a sad tale of mental health and wellness over the past 5 years.
Are we listening or just paying lip service?
What is so shocking is that everything I thought I knew is wrong. Last year you could’ve asked me what was an indicator on “happiness” and I would’ve jokingly touted the TV Show “Location, Location, Location” (probably with a wry smile) and gone on to tell you that individual circumstances made up the balance.
But here is the thing, I was wrong. The mental health divide is not so much locational; it’s generational. 1 in 3 people between 18-44 live in distress, two thirds of this demographic are either distressed or ‘managing’.
That team meeting of ten you join every week? 4 of them are in full on fight or flight mode, 3 of them are just getting by, and a measly 3 of them are thriving. Doesn’t quite correlate with what we see when late night doom scrolling on instagram does it?
But here’s the truly scary part; if the age range was 45-55 only 2 of them would be in distress, if you went 55+? Only 1 of them would be in the danger zone. And a full 6 out of the 10 would be thriving.
So what’s going on?
The world is.
Pandemics, wars, rampant increases to the cost of living have linked arms with housing shortages, AI disruption and digital overload to deliver a combo to these generations right where it hurts.
Not only have these things increased the strain on our mental health, things are getting worse. From the understandable MHQ (mental health quotient) collapse in 2020 things have deteriorated and rooted deep in culture, technology, economics and the environment.
The report makes it clear that we must tackle the heart of these problems: disconnection, environmental stress and digital overload. We need to embed recovery and mindfulness into our daily routines.
We believe digital aromatherapy holds the answer; that’s why we designed the ScentXpresso for the shower. Instead of needing yet more screen time it’s just you, scent, shower and guided breathing. Our natural farmed oils are kinder to the environment and it’s cheaper than your daily coffee.
By elevating part of your day that is often overlooked we’re creating a self-care escape that fits into your routine and is designed to be used daily, not just in crisis moments.
